Tioga County Soil & Water Conservation District – Vernal Pools

Vernal pools in Tioga County are seasonal wetlands created and protected through Tioga SWCD projects, often in partnership with the Upper Susquehanna Coalition (USC), to support wildlife, improve water quality, and restore natural habitats www.uppersusquehanna.org+1.

What are vernal pools?

Vernal pools are small, temporary wetlands that fill with rainwater in spring and dry out by summer. They are critical breeding and feeding habitats for amphibians (frogs, toads, salamanders), turtles, fairy shrimp, and specialized invertebrates like fingernail clams New York Natural Heritage Program Guides. In New York, they are considered State Rank S3 (Vulnerable) due to habitat loss and hydrologic alteration
